questions. president obama said he would cut the deficit in half in his first term. he gave us $6 trillion in new obama debt, in four years. he called push unpatriotic and irresponsible for $4 trillion in debt in eight years. so why would we expect he's going to keep his promise on any of these things? >> well, sean, you and i know about this time four years ago the economy collapsed. it was the result, i believe, and the president believes, of failed policies of george bush. that's what he walked into. very different world than anything in the campaign. here's what he did. he walked into office. we were shedding 750,000 jobs a month. you know all this. >> sean: wait a minute. >> let me finish. now we've created 5 million jobs over four years. >> sean: that's not true. that's not true, sir. sir, there are fewer americans working than when he took office. that is a fact. you get it right from the bureau of labor and statistics. here's the point, when he ran in 2008 he said it's the worst economy since the great depression. he told it was bad. he said and projected that if we pass a stimulus

the deficit which is important but when you look at the concerns of american, let's look at the top five concerns. one, the economy. two, jobs. three, health care. four, education. five was the budget deficit. so no one's minimizing the importance of the deficit but there really is not a program that deals with the other four and they are using extreme measures and cutting up various entitlements and americans that want to deal with the deficit. >> i think what happened in 2010 and democrats in a way allowed this to happen is that the republicans succeeded in making the deficit a central issue and a stand in for people's economic worries across the board. >> right. >> i think now it's much clearer to people that these two things are related but they are quite separate and there are moments when balancing the budget or cutting spending on things like schools and public safety can actually make unemployment worse. i think something else important has happened, which is the health care law was very unpopular on election day back then. the health care law is gaining ground. and they wer

those cuts is going to require compromise in a different type of deficit reduction plan. given all of those virginia jobs at stake, how can you say no to any type of tax and revenue increase, even if it is paired with a greater degree of spending cuts? >> getting our fiscal house in order in washington. i saw this as being another example of washington leaders not making decisions, putting off decisions to yet another commission, which, if it failed, as it did, it would be the responsibility of the federal government, which is national defense, as well as it being what is known to be over 200,000 technology and defense jobs in virginia. what we need to do is repeal or replace obamacare. but will sit trillions in spending, and that is harmful for business. i think we need to cut out and look at where there is redundancy in government. the government accountability office has put that forward. federal government employees, we have to reward them for cost- saving ideas. in the long term, a balanced budget amendment. tim said in the last debate that this is the right thing to do. now, he

swing states just ohio and florida, double-digit deficit in florida. almost double-digit deficit in ohio. we can probably win -- there is a slight path to victory without winning ohio, there really isn't one i see without winning florida. and though mitt romney is making a play for ohio and is very committed to competing in those two states we're starting to hear rumblings from smart republicans who say maybe they would be better offon pulling from ohio and investing in florida. and then through some combination of these other swing states which you would almost have to run the table pull out a victory in the electoral college, but the math is tough. >> eliot: when you are down that much in swing states it is tough to get the tech tonic plates to move. what would you counsel him? >> i don't think it's about picking and choosing on the map. when you look at the senate races they are falling apart even more for republicans, which i think may be a leading indicator for romney. it doesn't make sense to me that ohio florida, and massachusetts are falling apart on the senate side and yet romne

2013 is you can't sustain these deficits obviously for too long because they can't keep printing money and expect the world to take it or buy treasury notes forever. the economy is slow and they will be coming into another dip. they are foreign policy challenges i think the next president will have a moment between november 7, i agree just to begin november 7, on january 20. and i don't know, summer, fall of 2013 to do a lot. and i would bet that there would be a huge legislative agenda in 2013. i think whichever ones when can i do by the gridlock argument. if obama gets reelected he will have kind of a mandated basically. i mean, to go with his version of a big deal which will be bowles-simpson, the left version of bowles-simpson, let's say bowles-simpson with a tax hike for people over 250 or 500,000 or in a little less tight new form. if romney wins he will have a mandate for some version of the ryan budget, probably temper a little bit to get some democratic votes. if he becomes president i think we'll have a mandated something close to the. either way we'll probably get a big deal
